History

Introduced five years after Epiphone production moved to Korea in cooperation with the Samick Corporation, the Epiphone Les Paul Standard has been in continuous production for over twenty years.

The Epiphone Les Paul Standard was introduced in 1989 alongside the Les Paul Custom, the only other Les Paul offered at the time. For 1989, and only 1989, the Les Pauls featured headstocks similar to (but not the same as) Gibson's "Open Book" headstock. In 1990, the headstocks were changed to the current design.

Upon introduction, the Les Paul featured Green Key tuners with the Epiphone Logo stamped on their backs and a differently shaped truss rod cover with "Gibson" printed vertically. For 1989, and only 1989, the serial number was on a white sticker (with black border) on the back of the headstock and used the format (See Serial Numbers for decoding info).

In 1990, they began ink stamping the serial numbers onto the back of the headstocks and using a letter prefix to identify what factory the guitar was made at.

From roughly 1997-1999, Les Paul Standards had a white sticker on the headstock that read: "LP-STANDARD"

In 2002, Epiphone began using Grover tuners on the Les Paul Standard.

In 2004, the truss rod cover was changed to the current shape.

In 2005, the logo ink stamped on Limited Edition models was changed.
