NOTE: All Mahogany referred to in this Wiki is Industrial Mahogany (Philippine/Indonesian Mahogany) unless otherwise noted.

Types of Mahogany

Classification for Meliaceae or the Mahogany family.

The family consists of approx. 50 genera and 550 species. Only familiar Species and Genera (or speces with economic viability or a specific trait) are mentioned. Many of these are on the IUCN-redlist of endangered species. There are a few other Species or Genera producing timber.

Sidenotes: The Philippine or Indonesian Mahogany is included in the Mahogany-family. The (US-) timber or lumber trade designation for Philippine Mahogany will often include Lauan/Luan and Meranti(red or white variety) which are really species of the Shorea genus of the Dipterocarpaceae family.

Genus is in Latin followed by the common more popular name.
