Electar Century Amplifier

From its introduction in 1939 until 1957 the Century Amplifier was part of the Century range of instruments and amplifiers including the Century archtop electric guitar, Century Mandolin, Century Mandolin, Electar Century Hawaiian Lap Steel Guitar and Century Banjo. This line of instruments was available in "complete outfits" or "starter packs" as we know them today. These outfits typically included the instrument, case, amplifier and a cord. Century amplifers were available in AC or AC-DC models.

In 1939, the AC Century Amplifier was $62.25 including cover. The Century AC-DC outfit was $72.25 with a cover and the cover by itself was $2.25. By 1960, the Century EA25T amplifier was $189.50.

As the electric guitar took over on the bandstand, the Century became a favored amp among guitarists. An extremely striking furniture grade cabinet that employed figured maple came complete with a metal handle located on the top. With rear mounted controls, it was perfect for orchestra work where the guitarist placed the amp in front of his music stand.

The Century, with its elegant good looks, became an instant success for Epiphone and could be seen on stages around the world. Players such as Al Hendrickson of the Artie Shaw Band, Lloyd Gillson with Sammy Kaye, Harold Aloma with the Tommy Dorsey Band, Al Caiolaand George Van Eps, Father of the 7 string guitar, were all endorsing the Century.
